High school can be tough. There is a lot of stress, anxiety and peer pressure to deal with every day. On top of all that, you must decide which college to attend. Choosing the right college can be a challenge but don’t let it consume all of your time pulling you away from your classes. You need to stay focus and keep your grades up so you can get into the college of your choice.
Choosing a college is a big decision and it needs to be dealt with carefully. Take your time, do your research and find the college that is truly right for you. First, make sure you’re ready for college and once that decision has been made, you can start looking at the different ones that would be acceptable for you. The following do’s and don’ts can help you make a good decision when choosing the right college.
Do:
• Determine what you think is important in a college.
• Eliminate all of the colleges that are obviously the wrong ones taking into consideration things such as, location, cost, extra-curricular options and so forth.
• Make a list of the colleges that are good choices and begin researching them in more depth. You can use the Internet to learn what each one has to offer so you can make a comparison.
• Visit college fairs and talk to the representatives to get an inside view. Be sure and ask lots of questions while you’re there.
• Once you’ve narrowed down the search to three or four options, take the time to visit them in person and take a tour of the college. This will give you a good idea of what it would be like if you choose to go there.
• Make sure the college offers what you need to pursue your career otherwise, it won’t be very beneficial.
• Take a look at the graduation rate for the college.
• Find out how many students is in an average class at any given time.
Don’t:
• Don’t choose a college because someone else, friend or family, wants you to go there. You need to make this choice based on your own personal needs.
• Don’t choose a college because of its name.
• Don’t get obsessive because this is a long process that should take time and it shouldn’t consume all of your time.
• Don’t put off looking for the right college until you’re almost ready to graduate. You need more time than that to make a good choice.
• Don’t get impatient, you will eventually find the right one.
Get an early start on your search and this will make choosing a college much easier because you’ll have time to do the proper research. If you begin to get irritated, take a short break and start looking again later.
Going to college and choosing the right one for your needs is a huge decision but when you’re informed and learn as much as you can about your options, you can make a good decision.
