When Going to College Does the School Name Really Matter?

When going to college does the school name really matter? Many people will say “yes, of course it does” and others will say “no, it has nothing to do with it”. However, the answer really depends on what you consider to be important. Some people want to go to the same college their parents or grandparents went to. Others just simply want to go to college anywhere to get the degrees they need to enhance their career.

Some people believe that the name of the school is impressive and if they go to a college with a popular name, they will have better opportunities. Others believe that your credentials speak for themselves and it doesn’t matter where you go. Still others have a limited income and have no say in the matter one way or the other. They must go to a college they can afford regardless of whether or not they believe the name of the college matters when it comes to being successful.

Granted, there may be some companies that will only hire graduates from big name colleges but there are many more that will look strictly at your credentials and your abilities. Going to Harvard will certainly look excellent on a resume but it doesn’t guarantee you a job.

Whether or not you get hired will depend on many factors and nothing can guarantee you a position at any company. Therefore, you can’t count on the name of your school to ensure you’ll be chosen over another job applicant. It’s even possible for smaller companies to choose someone who has not been to a big prestigious school because they may believe that they cannot afford you. After all, wouldn’t you expect the highest wages possible for the job you do if you graduated from a prestigious college?

With all of this in mind you can see that it’s difficult to answer the question, when going to college does the school name really matter? It’s basically a matter of opinion and you should probably worry more about what courses the school has to offer, what extra-curricular activities they have, how much it will cost to go to the college and so forth. These are the things that’ll help you choose a good college that suits your needs.

Worrying about whether or not the name of the school really matters is a big waste of time. There are so many more important things that you need to be concerned with, especially when you’re in high school. Plus, the truth is, there are many great colleges out there that are not as well-known as some of the others but that can provide an excellent education.
