Going to College Tips for Living in a Dorm Room

Going to college can be fun, exciting and definitely an experience to remember but it can also be challenging in many ways. For example, living in a dorm room is not the easier thing you’ll ever try to do. You must share this room with someone else and most of the time, you won’t have anything in common with them. For some reason, it just seems to work out that way.

Dorm rooms are also small, they offer little privacy and it can get very stressful trying to study when there’s a party going on in the hall or the room next to yours. Therefore, you may need a few tips on how to make the most of living in a dorm room to help you get through the first year of college a little easier.

Living in a dorm room tips:

• If you have the option of choosing a dorm room on a certain floor, do so. For example, some colleges have what’s called “special interest halls” in which the students on that floor share a common interest.
• Since you’ll be sharing your room with someone that you most likely never met before, it would be a good idea to set the rules the first day. However, you don’t get to make all the rules, you’ll need to discus both of your likes and dislikes and compromise until both of you are happy with the rules.
• Always follow the rules of the dorm. If you don’t, you run the risk of being kicked out.
• Bring as little with you to college as you can get by with. This is important because you are going to be short on space and you don’t need something useless (like that big stuffed animal you’ve loved since you were a child) taking up valuable space.
• Always be courteous and respectful to everyone else in the dorm, even if there is a problem.
• If a serious problem does arise, report it to the proper authorities so they can handle it appropriately.

The going to college tips for living in a dorm room listed above can help make your life much easier and help things to go smoother for you and your roommate. You already have enough to worry about without adding to the problems with simple things that could have easily been avoided.

No one wants to fight with their roommate and if you get everything out in the open, you won’t have to. No one wants to get in trouble with the school and knowing and obeying the rules will prevent that from happening. In other words, you have the opportunity to make your dorm room experience a pleasant one if you get started off on the right foot. Using the tips listed above can help.
