Is there a serious (non-comedy) movie that shows what college is really like for a freshman?

Trying to find a movie to show high school students, a movie that reflects the real pressures and adjustments that need to be made once a student goes off to college.

Most college movies are either straight beer-and-parties type comedies, or romantic comedies that only have college as a backdrop. I’m looking for pretty much a straight drama, something closer to “The Paper Chase,” but for undergraduates.

I don’t know of one. If your staying home and going then its going to be like high school only you get free reign on if you pass or not pretty much, don’t have teachers pushing you to do the work. if you don’t do it its your money wasted when you fail the class. If you go away and stay in a dorm, its like in some of the movies, you will probably start partying

“Higher Learning” is a pretty serious movie. Some of the themes include:
    -Racism (against blk people).
    -Sexism (against women).
-Cops abusing power (against blk people).
    -Date-Rape.
    -Exploring female bisexuality.
    -National socialism.
    -Gun violence on campus.

I watched it a few years ago but it still sticks out in my mind. It also features the same actress from the movie ‘Buffy The Vampyre Slayer’. … Uh, but it’s not goofy like that one.

Dead Poets Society – a very serious movie that seems to fit what you are looking for

    Plot :
Painfully shy Todd Anderson has been sent to the school where his popular older brother was valedictorian. His room-mate, Neil, although exceedingly bright and popular, is very much under the thumb of his overbearing father. The two, along with their other friends, meet Professor Keating, their new English teacher, who tells them of the Dead Poets Society, and encourages them to go against the status quo. Each, in their own way, does this, and are changed for life. Written by Liz Jordan in IMDB

and Carrie – It’s a thriller, but it’s also a chilling on-screen metaphor for what it’s like to be the high school outcast.

The movie Higher Learning is very good, although its kinda tragic, but it might be something worth watching for you…its got Omar Epps, Michael Rappaport, Tyra Banks, Laurence Fishburne, its very good

Oh, lol, I guess I didn’t read the question all the way! This is probably not a movie you want to show kids! Other than this movie though, I really don’t know of anything, its a really graphic movie, something parents probably dont want their 16 or 17 yr olds to see yet

I watched it when I was like 18 though, so Idk, lol
